The nakhlite martian meteorites have been interpreted as crystal cumulates – augite and olivine with interstitial melt. Their bulk compositions, however, imply that all nakhlites (but a couple) represent magmas. Their mantle source must also have been rich in augite, suggesting a highly metasomatized source in a chemically heterogeneous mantle, possibly near a plume head.
